ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — One person was killed in a two-car collision that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 for about three hours Sunday.

Troopers said two vehicles crashed near the Northampton-Halifax County line, causing a sports utility vehicle to flip four times. Pearl Richardson, of South Carolina, died in the accident. She was a passenger in the SUV. Five other people in the SUV were hurt. The other driver kept going.

Authorities found the other driver's vehicle behind a house in Roanoke Rapids. Soon after that, they caught up with the driver, Nikite Gray of Virginia. He faces a number of charges, including manslaughter and DWI.

Traffic was rerouted around the scene near mile marker 176 before the interstate reopened around 5 p.m.
