Posted Updated

CARY, N.C. — History was made Monday in Cary when the Highway Patrol named its first female lieutenant.

First Sgt. Patricia Poole, who joined the patrol in 1987, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Poole is stationed in Burlington, where she supervises 33 employees.

It is the second time Poole has made history. Poole was also the patrol's first female sergeant.

Poole was one of 46 troopers who received higher ranks. Patrol commander Colonel Richard Holden said the troopers being promoted have demonstrated excellence in their work.
