CARY, N.C. — Stephanie Bernabe and Gena Villari each scored Saturday as Raleigh's Broughton High School beat Greensboro Grimsley, 2-0, to win the girls' 4-A state soccer championship.
The shutout gave the Caps of coach Izzy Hernandez their fifth state championship in six years and seventh overall. Though some expected it to be a rebuilding season at Broughton, the team finished 22-0-2.
Sophomore striker Molly Skinner was named the most valuable player of Saturday's game at SAS Stadium.
Bernabe got the Caps on the board first, scoring at the 15:50 mark. Villari scored following a corner kick with just more than 10 minutes left against Grimsley.
The game marked the seventh state-championship game between the schools, with Broughton taking a 5-2 edge in the series.
