Raleigh City Employee Killed During Robbery

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Late Saturday night and early Sunday, Raleigh police still were looking for two suspects who killed a city utilities employee during an attempted robbery Friday night at the city public utility operations center.

The suspects were still on the run, and police had no detailed description of them.

Robert Sanchez Saiz was shot to death when two men attempted to rob Saiz and several other employees in the break room of the operations center shortly after Saiz's shift ended Friday night. Saiz was shot in the back after he turned to run.

The suspects fled, and none of the other employees was injured.

The suspects may have known it was payday at the center.

According to reports, they showed a gun as they entered the break room, then ordered the employees to surrender their wallets and lie down.

Saiz was a water-sewer supervisor. Married and the father of two children, he had worked for the city since 1999, leading crews out of the operations center to repair sewers and water lines.

Employees on duty when Saiz was killed were given the weekend off. Police patrolled the parking lot at the operations center Saturday afternoon.
