SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline overturned in Johnston County, spilling more than half of its load Thursday.
Trooper C.P. Oravits with the state Highway Patrol says a passenger car failed to yield to the truck, causing a collision on state Highway 96.
The truck overturned, puncturing one of the tanks. About 5,200 gallons spilled into a nearby ditch, but authorities say they have it contained.
Authorities transferred the remaining fuel in the truck to a second tanker.
All but four families that were evacauted were allowed to return to the area. Residents were put up in Smithfield for the night.
The stretch of road will likely reopen sometime Friday.
The driver of the car was charged with failure to yield. The driver, a passenger and the truck driver were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
