— The Arena Football League's Carolina Cobras have signed head coach Mike Neu to a three-year contract it was announced Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Neu, who took over the coaching duties for the Cobras during their playoff run last season after head coach Doug Kay abruptly resigned, was the club's offensive coordinator. As head coach he will continue to call the offensive plays.

Last season, with Neu in control of the offense, the Cobras averaged 56.1 points per game and ranked fifth in the AFL in scoring offense after ranking 14th in the league in scoring in 2000 prior to Neu.

Neu made his first major hire as head coach on Monday, naming Bret Munsey as defensive coordinator. Munsey, who worked with Neu as defensive coordinator with the af2's Augusta Stallions in 2000, was head coach of the Tennessee Valley Vipers last season. He led the Vipers to a 14-2 regular season finish (15-3 overall) and was named af2 Coach of the Year. His defense ranked in the top five in all defensive categories and placed three players on the All-af2 team. Neu was honored as af2's Coach of the Year during the Augusta Stallions inaugural season in 2000.

Munsey, who played wide receiver/defensive back for the AFL's Orlando Predators in 1991, also served on the Predators coaching staff in 1998. He played wide receiver at Concord College (Division II) from 1987-90, where he was selected All-Conference and led the team in receiving three of his four years.

In other off-season news, the Cobras hired Brian French as Director of Sponsorship Sales. French worked last season as Director of Sales and Marketing for the Indiana Firebirds after spending the previous three seasons as the Firebirds Director of Corporate Sponsorships.

The Cobras, entering their third season in the Arena Football League, play from April - July at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Raleigh. Season tickets for the 2002 season go on sale October 1, 2001 and may be purchased by calling the Cobras Ticket Office at (919) 281-0400.
