Cobras Ink Head Coach To Three-Year Deal

RALEIGH — The Arena Football League's CarolinaCobras have signed head coach Mike Neu to a three-year contract it was announced Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Neu, who took over the coaching duties for the Cobras during their playoffrun last season after head coach Doug Kay abruptly resigned, was the club'soffensive coordinator. As head coach he will continue to call the offensiveplays.

Last season, with Neu in control of the offense, the Cobras averaged56.1 points per game and ranked fifth in the AFL in scoring offense afterranking 14th in the league in scoring in 2000 prior to Neu.

Neu made his first major hire as head coach on Monday, naming Bret Munsey as defensive coordinator. Munsey, who worked with Neu as defensive coordinator with the af2's Augusta Stallions in 2000, was head coach of the TennesseeValley Vipers last season. He led the Vipers to a 14-2 regular seasonfinish (15-3 overall) and was named af2 Coach of the Year. His defenseranked in the top five in all defensive categories and placed three playerson the All-af2 team. Neu was honored as af2's Coach of the Year during theAugusta Stallions inaugural season in 2000.

Munsey, who played wide receiver/defensive back for the AFL's OrlandoPredators in 1991, also served on the Predators coaching staff in 1998. Heplayed wide receiver at Concord College (Division II) from 1987-90, where hewas selected All-Conference and led the team in receiving three of his fouryears.

In other off-season news, the Cobras hired Brian French as Director of Sponsorship Sales. French worked last season as Director of Sales andMarketing for the Indiana Firebirds after spending the previous threeseasons as the Firebirds Director of Corporate Sponsorships.

The Cobras, entering their third season in the Arena Football League, playfrom April - July at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Raleigh. Seasontickets for the 2002 season go on sale October 1, 2001 and may be purchasedby calling the Cobras Ticket Office at (919) 281-0400.
