Three Motorists Killed When Car Struck By Train In Edgecombe Co.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Three people died and a fourth was critically injured when a passenger train collided with a car that went around a gate at an Edgecombe County railroad crossing, a state trooper said Sunday.

Amtrak's Silver Meteor train, traveling south to Florida, went through the crossing at 11:16 p.m. Saturday when it collided with the vehicle containing three women and a man, Highway Patrol Sgt. L.C. Harrell said.

The gate went down and several cars stopped on State Road 1402 just north of Rocky Mount, but the vehicle went around the gate and through the crossing as the train arrived, Harrell said.

The male driver and two female passengers inside were killed. The fourth passenger, also female, was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where her condition wasn't immediately available.

The names of the victims weren't released Sunday evening pending notification of their family members, Harrell said.

No one was seriously injured aboard the train. A phone call seeking comment from an Amtrak official wasn't immediately returned.
