Posted Updated

PEMBROKE, N.C. — A Pembroke woman was recovering Monday after being rescued from a sinking car.

Investigators said Rebecca Deater was trapped in the trunk of her own car when a passing driver heard her screaming and called police.

Deputies said Deater's boyfriend, Jethro Thomas, hit her on the head, then put her in the car and rolled it into a nearby swamp.

Thomas made his first court appearance Monday for attempted murder.

Deater remained in serious condition Monday.
