— Wilson Fike's Richie Hunt fired a two-under 70 on the first day of the men's Class 3-A state high school championship.

Hunt led the field by three strokes. Southeast Guilford's Scott Blackwell and Josh Sandman, and Burlington Williams' Jerry Richardson all fired 71s on the 6,129-yard layout at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek.

Three Hickory golfers fired 72s to put the Red Tornadoes at the top of the team standings with a 289. Hickory is eight shots ahead of Southeast Guilford, while defending champion Wilson Hunt is third at 299.

Hickory finished second to Hunt last season.
