Abandoned Baby Officially Has New Home

Posted Updated

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A baby abandoned last November at the steps of a Tarboro church now has a permanent home.

Edgecombe County investigators said a woman discovered the girl outside McKendree Church at the intersection of Jenkins Farm and Nobles Mill Pond roads.

The child was placed in foster care and was officially adopted last week. Neither the child's nor her parents' names were released.

Authorities still have not located the baby's biological parents, but say they are still looking for them.

Under North Carolina's Safe Surrender law, which was adopted in 2005, mothers can surrender a child to any responsible adult without fear of prosecution. But the child must be unharmed and under 7 days old.
