WINTERVILLE, N.C. — A former Winterville police officer will spend five years in prison for planting pipe bombs.

Thomas Uzenski was convicted last year of planting the bombs along a Pitt County highway. Uzenski also will pay a $5,000 fine.

The sentence was handed down nearly two years after Uzenski was called a hero for finding a pipe bomb on the side of N.C. 11 and possibly saving lives.
