Police To Provide Added Security On DATA Routes

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are doing more to make sure people who ride city buses feel safe.

Four police officers will be assigned to protect public transit passengers and workers after a

Durham Area Transit Authority

(DATA) bus was the target of gunfire last week.

The officers will patrol buses and terminals from 10 a.m. to midnight.The new transit unit will be in place March 1.

The officers will replace security guards from Wackenhut Corp -- the company that has been providing security for DATA.
