Person County Woman Dies When Car Flips Into Creek

Posted Updated

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — On the same morning that a Wake County woman skidded off a slick road into Crabtree Creek, a Person County woman flipped into a creek north of Hillsborough.

Unlike the Wake County incident, in which

the woman was pulled out of the creek

by a motorist who happened upon the scene, the Hillsborough accident had a tragic result.

Kristin Torain, 24, still was in her vehicle when she was found dead in a creek around 11 a.m. Saturday.

According to her parents, Torain left UNC Hospitals, where she worked as a nurse on the pediatric ward, at 6 a.m. Friday. She was headed home in her 1999 Mazda, but never made it.

On her way home, Torain phoned her parents to tell them road conditions were bad.

According to investigators, Torain's car went off Highway 57 in the vicinity of Beavertail Road just north of Hillsborough. The car went into a creek upside down.

Torain was found dead on the scene around 11 a.m. and was identified around 1:30 Saturday afternoon.
