Woman Dies In Cumberland County Crash; 5 Injured

STEDMAN, N.C. — A 67-year-old woman was killed and five other people injured in a traffic accident Sunday just inside the Stedman city limits.

According to investigators, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Highway 24.

Lumisha McDaniel was on her way to the grocery store when she pulled onto Highway 24 in Stedman. Investigators said a car going faster than the posted 35 mph speed limit slammed into McDaniel's car.

The crash and its location caught troopers by surprise.

"We were kind of anticipating something was going to happen, as it did Thanksgiving," said Sgt. Vic Ward, of the Highway Patrol. "But in this case, it didn't happen on Interstate95. It happened out in the county, so it's somewhat unusual."

Five people in the vehicle that hit McDaniel's car were hurt, but troopers said not seriously. Investigators may file charges against the driver.
