Durham police said the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. when a southbound 1991 Toyota truckdriven by Jose Efrain Vasquez Gutierrez, 26, hit a patch ofice, went out of control and slid sideways into the path of a northbound1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by Matthew Patrick Lake, 34, of Holly Springs.The front of Lake's truck collided with the passenger side of the Toyota.
A 26-year-old man, identified as Jose Evenor Arqueta Galves of 2920 Chapel Hill Road, was sitting in the right rear passenger seat of the Toyota. He was trapped inside the truck and pronounced dead at the scene.
No charges had been filed by midday Tuesday. But the accident remained under investigation.
Gregorio Hernandez, 38, was sitting in the right front passenger seat of the Toyota truck and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.
Gutierrez was not injured. Lake was taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threateninginjuries.
Investigators said there was no evidence of excessive speed. No charges havebeen filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
The accident tied up traffic on South Miami Boulevard for more than two hours.
