Third Cumberland Inmate Mistakenly Released From Jail

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities in Cumberland County say a jailer mistakenly released an inmate for the third time this year.

Authorities say Dorian Carter was in jail on traffic violations when he was mistakenly released Wednesday. Officials say a jailer failed to follow proper procedure, which led to the inmate's release.

Carter was a free man for about three hours before authorities were able to recapture him.

The incident is the latest in a series of problems for the jail, which opened in February. Since that time, two other inmates were mistakenly released and later recaptured, two inmates committed suicide and two jailers were accused of having sex with inmates.

The chief jailer was also suspended for five days without pay as punishment for problems at the facility.

There is no word about what the Sheriff's Office will do after this latest incident.
