A piece of Raleigh history was inside an old chicken coop in Kinston.
Jeff Foyles bought an antique safe 23 years ago. Soon afterward, he discovered a secret compartment with the deed to 300 acres of land where the Dorothea Dix Hospital is.
Foyles said he would like to see the document preserved and displayed. He said he has no idea how much it would be worth if sold.
When the hospital closes next year, Raleigh hopes to buy the land from the state. City leaders are still deciding what to do with the land if they get it.
