Durham Board Approves Plan For Proposed Montessori Magnet School

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham School Board Thursday night approved a plan to turn George Watts Elementary School into a Montessori magnet school.

In the last few years, many families have pulled their children out of Watts in favor of other schools.

Some believe the latest proposal will bring back those kids. Others worried it will push out the low-income children already enrolled there.

The Montessori plan will begin next fall at Watts. All students who currently attend Watts still will be allowed to go there; the Montessori school will become a separate part of the school.

The Montessori plan essentially will become a magnet program where all students can apply.

That was the superintendent's recommendation before the board voted to approve it.
