DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police, acting on a CrimeStoppers tip, arrested a murder suspect on Newcastle Road Wednesday morning.

Officers received a tip that 24-year-old Kirk Orlando Smith was at a relative's apartment in the Strawberry Hills complex on Newcastle Road. Smith was arrested without incident around 10:45 a.m.

Smith is charged with murder in the Sept. 20 shooting death of 25-year-old Devondre Peace in the 1000 block of Rosedale Avenue. The incident was reported at 2:27 p.m., when a friend who was trying to get help for Peace drove him to Durham Police Headquarters at 505 West Chapel Hill Street.

Officers found Peace inside a minivan parked in the visitors parking lot near the front of Police Headquarters. Peace was pronounced dead at the scene.
