FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Cumberland County deputy is recovering after a crash early Tuesday involving a suspected drunken driver, authorities said.

The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 301 near Tom Starling Road just after midnight, authorities said.

Deputy Lloyd Blevins was responding to a call that a driver was going the wrong way on the highway, and a pickup truck crashed head-on into his cruiser, authorities said.

Valerie Burtis, of Hope Mills, is charged with driving while intoxicated, traveling in the wrong direction and failing to turn on headlights.

Burtis and Blevins were treated at Cape Fear Valley Hospital and released.
