Durham Judge Awards Woman Nearly $5 Million After Assault

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Five years after a brutal beating, a Durham judge awarded a woman nearly $5 million.

In 1998, Yvonne Walker was attacked and left for dead. Walker, who was four months pregnant at the time of the assault, spent nearly two months in a coma.

Bryant Von Strothers, Walker's boyfriend, was arrested, but he was never convicted. The judge entered a $4.75 million civil judgment against Von Strothers.

A judge dismissed the case when Preiss, a former police technician with the Durham Police Department, threw out the evidence.

Walker's injuries were so severe that she still has trouble walking and talking.
