Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County school bus and a car were involved in a fatal traffic accident Wednesday morning at the intersection of Brentwood Drive and Skycrest Drive.

According to Wake County school officials, the bus -- which had no students aboard -- was driving on Skycrest when a 1993 Honda driven by Mary Katherine Hardy, 44, of Raleigh, ran a red light on Brentwood headed toward Capital Boulevard.

The bus hit Hardy's vehicle in the side, killing Hardy instantly. The Honda was demolished, and the school bus suffered front-end damage.

The driver of the bus, 49-year-old Rose Gwendolyn Smith, was not hurt.
