Chapel Hill Council Votes For Sprinkler Requirements

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill town council voted in favor of requiring sprinkler systems in new bars and clubs.

The town council met until late Wednesday last night, voting 8-1in favor of the proposal.

Any new bar or club with an occupancy of 200 or more must have operating sprinklers before it can get a certificate of occupancy.

Any new bar or club with any points of exit that are above or below ground level and have an occupancy exceeding 100 people must install sprinklers before getting its certificate of occupancy.

An amendment to the ordinance exempts existing structures that serve alcohol from installing sprinklers.

The vote was delayed several weeks due to Hurricane Isabel.
