DOT, UNC Propose Alternate Routes To Football Games In Chapel Hill

RALEIGH, N.C. — Due to the North Carolina 54 ramp closures affecting westbound I-40 traffic, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and UNC-Chapel Hill are working together to ensure that people attending the football games in Chapel Hill on Saturday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 18, arrive and leave as safely and efficiently as possible.

Motorists are encouraged to choose one of the following alternate routes:

Westbound motorists driving to Chapel Hill

  • I-40 West to N.C. 86 (Exit 266) to Chapel Hill;
  • I-40 West to N.C. 751 (Exit 274) and turn right on N.C. 751 then left on N.C. 54;
  • I-40 West to U.S. 15-501 South (Exit 270) and turn left.Go to Estes Drive and turn right for the University Mall park-and-ride lot;
  • Take U.S. 15-501 to N.C. 54 and exit right, before the bridge, onto Raleigh Road to campus;
  • Cross the N.C. 54 bridge, exit right to N.C. 54 East and follow signs for the N.C. 54 park-and-ride lot near the Friday Center.
  • Westbound motorists leaving Chapel Hill via N.C. 54 and I-40 West:

  • N.C. 54 West to I-40 East (turn right onto ramp prior to bridge) to N.C. 751 (Exit 274) and turn left, cross the bridge and turn left to access I-40 West;
  • Continue west on N.C. 54 and turn right onto N.C. 751 South. Turn right to access I-40 West prior to crossing the bridge.
  • Motorists traveling east on I-40 will be able to exit onto and off of N.C. 54.

    Law enforcement will be positioned at all major interchanges to help the traffic flow.

    Motorists are also encouraged to use the available Park and Ride Lots at the Friday Center and at University Mall.
