Motorcyclist Seriously Injured In Accident On I-40

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A China Grove man was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 40 West in southern Durham.

The accident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. after a 1993 Saturn driven by 50-year-old David Gregory Peoples, of Whitsett, slowed for heavy traffic in the westbound lanes of I-40.

Curtis Allen Brinkley, 38, of China Grove, was riding a 1999 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the lane behind the Saturn and slammed on his brakes in an attempt to avoid an accident. The motorcycle slid, and Brinkley struck the Saturn.

Brinkley was taken to Duke University Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Peoples was not injured.

Investigators charged Brinkley with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and wearing an improper motorcycle helmet.

The accident slowed traffic on I-40 West for several hours.
