DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Charges are pending after a Durham County school bus crashed head-on Tuesday into a car.
The Highway Patrol said bus driver Patsy Gupton, 43, of Hillsborough, was on Junction Road when she crossed the centerline and hit 36-year-old Yvette Umscheid's car. Troopers said Gupton was trying to avoid rear-ending a car in front of her.
Umscheid and school bus monitor Arthur Brandon, 76, of Durham were taken to Duke Medical Center. Umscheid is listed in critical condition. Brandon was later released from the hospital.
A 10-year-old child was on the school bus and was not hurt.
