Chapel Hill Town Council Puts Off Vote On Sprinklers In Clubs

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The debate over installing sprinklers in some bars and nightclubs in Chapel Hill has been stalled but will heat up again.

A vote that was scheduled for Monday night's Town Council meeting was moved to Oct. 8. Production of packets containing information relevant to the debate was delayed because of Hurricane Isabel.

If the measure passes, only three existing businesses would be affected.

New clubs that hold at least 100 people would also be required to install sprinklers before they open.

Council members suggested the idea after a nightclub fire in Rhode Island earlier this year that killed 100 people.
