Isabel Causes Damage In Hayes Barton Neighborhood

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A freak accident landed a Raleigh woman in the hospital Thursday.

The woman had gotten off work early and was trying to beat Hurricane Isabel home. As the woman turned onto Reid Street in the Hayes Barton neighborhood, a giant oak tree came crashing down on her car and trapped her inside.

Firefighters worked for nearly 30 minutes to free her. They cut away the tree and used the jaws of life to pull the woman out. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Hayes Barton/Five Points area always seems to bear the brunt of any storm. The old trees tend to topple in the wind.

Not far from where the woman was trapped in her car, another tree snapped and crashed into a home on White Oak Road. One person was home at the time, but she was not hurt.
