Ten Commandments Tablets Hang On Old Cumberland Courthouse

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — While the Ten Commandments come down in some places, they stay up in others.

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore has drawn national attention for his refusal to move a display of the Ten Commandments from the Montgomery County courthouse. The Cumberland County courthouse has had the tablets posted since the building opened 79 years ago. No one has ever sued.

County leaders defend the display, saying it is not a religious issue, but a historical one. They are trying to keep the site as close to the way it was in the 1920s.

The new courthouse does not have a display of the Ten Commandments.
