DOT, UNC Announce Alternate Route To Football Games

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Due to the N.C. 54 ramp closures, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill are working together to ensure that people attending football games in Chapel Hill the next two Saturdays arrive and leave as safely and efficiently as possible.

Motorists are encouraged to choose one of the following alternate routes:

Eastbound motorists driving to Chapel Hill:

  • I-40 East to N.C. 86 (Exit 266) to Chapel Hill; or
  • I-40 East past N.C. 54 to N.C. 751 (Exit 274) and turn around, to I-40 West to N.C. 54; or
  • I-40 East to U.S. 15-501 South (Exit 270) and turn right. Go to Estes Drive and turn right for the University Mall park-and-ride lot; or take U.S. 15-501 to N.C. 54 and exit right, before the bridge, onto Raleigh Road to campus; or cross the N.C. 54 bridge, exit right to N.C. 54 East and follow signs for the N.C. 54 park-and-ride lot near the Friday Center.
  • Eastbound motorists leaving Chapel Hill via N.C. 54 and I-40 East:

  • N.C. 54 East to I-40 West (cross bridge, turn left) to U.S. 15-501 (Exit 274) and turn around, to I-40 East;
  • Continue east on N.C. 54 and right onto N.C. 751 South. Cross the bridge over I-40. Turn left to access eastbound I-40.
  • Motorists traveling west on I-40 to Chapel Hill still will be able to exit onto and off of N.C. 54.

    Law enforcement will be positioned at all major interchanges to help the traffic flow.

    Motorists also are encouraged to use the available Park and Ride Lots at the Friday Center and at University Mall.

    NCDOT reminds motorists that there will be additional traffic in the Triangle on Saturday due to other sporting events in the area.

    This construction is part of the project to widen I-40. For real-time travel information, visit the DOT
