DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Bahama man is dead after a wreck involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle north of Durham Wednesday morning.

The wreck happened at 6:35 a.m. at Highway 501 at Lowell Road, in front of the Black Horse Run subdivision. Officials said a school bus was crossing Highway 501 North to get onto Highway 501 South when it turned in front of the car of 72-year-old Stephen Cates, Sr. of Bahama.

The Highway Patrol said the bus rolled over onto its side and on top of the car, trapping Cates inside. Cates was airlifted to a hospital, but later died. No students were on the bus.

The bus driver was not injured. Highway Patrol officials said the bus failed to yield, but no charges have been filed. Authorities believe fog may have played a role in the morning accident.

Highway 501 was closed to traffic for about two hours as crews cleared the wreckage.
