UNC Police Urge Caution After Early-Morning Robbery

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — No one was injured in a robbery early Saturday on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

UNC police said a victim was robbed of her purse at about 2 a.m. on a walkway between Hamilton and Caldwell halls, west of Raleigh Street.

The victim described the robber as a black male between 5-feet-9 inches and 6-feet tall, wearing a white mesh football-style jersey. The robber told the victim he had a gun, although none was displayed.

The case remains under investigation, said UNC Police Chief Derek Poarch.

Increased patrols already had been scheduled for the coming days as students return to campus for the fall semester, which begins Tuesday.

Safety and security awareness discussions will be included in regularly-scheduled residence hall meetings with students.

"We want to urge everyone on campus not to walk alone at night," Poarch said. "These types of events almost never happen unless the victim is alone. Please be alert and pay attention to your surroundings. Avoid areas that are isolated, dimly lit or dark. And above all, always stay in pairs or groups, or use the university's Point-to-Point express service."
