Posted Updated

PERSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities are investigating the crash of an experimental plane near the Person County airport Monday afternoon.

Airport officials said the pilot, Dr. Bruce Dalton, 60, of Hurdle Mills, reported some kind of problem just after takeoff around 2:45 p.m.

Authorities said Dalton turned the plane around, but crashed into a fence about a mile from the airport near Cates Mill Road.

Dalton was airlifted to Duke University Medical Center in serious condition. He improved enough to be released from Duke on Sept. 5.

The plane was moved to a hangar at the airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA will investigate.
