Former UNC Star Forte Appears In Court To Answer To Assault Charges

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — Former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill basketball star Joseph Forte appeared in an Orange County courtroom Monday to answer to assault charges.

Forte, now a member of the Seattle Supersonics, is accused of punching UNC-Chapel Hill student James Gibson during a pickup basketball game back in May. Gibson, a reserve fullback for the UNC football team, said Forte hit him in the face. He was treated for a cut on his eye that required stitches. Forte was later charged with a misdemeanor offense.

Orange County District Attorney Carl Fox said an agreement was reached in the incident, but those details were not released. Forte's case is still pending and has been continued until Oct. 20.

Forte did not talk to reporters after leaving the courthouse.

In April, Maryland State Police arrested the Seattle Supersonics guard on charges of speeding and drug and gun possession.
