GOLDSBORO — Five people have been arrested for a string of robberies in Wayne County.
They have been identified as Darnell Battle, Terrance Bell, Damon Rhodes, Brando Young and Shapora Grandy. The five were arrested shortly after midnight.
According to investigators, the suspects robbed a Handy Mart Convenience Store just minutes before they were arrested. All five are being held in the Wayne County Jail on $50,000 bond.
Charges are pending from four other robberies in Goldsboro and Mount Olive.
The arrests came after the Wayne County Sheriffs Office received a report that the Handy Mart Convenience Store, at the intersection of N.C. Highway 581 and U.S. Highway 70 West had been robbed by two black males.
Deputies said the robbers forced the clerk at gunpoint to try and open the safe. When the clerk could not open the safe, he was forced to lie down on the floor. Money was taken from the cash register, and the robbers fled the store.
A witness at the scene provided officers a description of the vehicle -- a Ford Thunderbird. The sheriff was in the area and responded.
While traveling on Buck Swamp Road, the suspect vehicle passed Sheriff Winders traveling in the opposite direction. Sheriff Winders turned around and gave pursuit and notified other responding officers.
The suspect vehicle stopped at the Buck Swamp Store at the intersection of Perkins Road and Buck Swamp Road. The sheriff detained the five people in the vehicle until other officers arrived.
Sgt. Steve Mozingo and his shift officers arrived and assisted, as did the Pikeville and Fremont police.
Deputy Cyltee Hawley and Karl Rabun responded with the K-9 and attempted to locate other items. Detective Dusty Johnson had been assigned as the lead investigator. Detective Sergeants Tony Morris and Mike Dale responded to assist.
The detectives' efforts have resulted in solving four Goldsboro robberies and the robbery of the Southern Belle Restaurant in Mount Olive.
The five defendants have been arrested for the Handy Mart Robbery and are charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Grandy also has been charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm. Charges are pending from the Goldsboro Police Department and the Mount Olive Police Department concerning those crimes.
