CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A Hillsborough man accused of kidnapping and raping a University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill student is in jail on $1.5 million bond.

Billy Lunsford, 31, is charged with kidnapping the 21-year-old woman last week at Millcreek Apartments in Chapel Hill. According to police, Lunsford grabbed the woman as she walked to her car and forced her to drive to an undisclosed area.

Police said Lunsford raped the woman repeatedly before letting her go six hours later. He was charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping, seven counts of first-degree rape and six counts of first-degree sex offense.

Chapel Hill police officers and Orange County deputies jointly investigated the incident because crimes occurred in both jurisdictions.

There are several assault-on-a-female charges on Lunsford's criminal record dating back to 1988.
