Zoning Change To Allow For NCCU Expansion

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham City Council approved a zoning change that will allow

North Carolina Central University

to expand.

The university plans to build a new science building and student dormitory on land that includes the former Hillside High School.

Money for the $35 million project came from a public bond.

Chancellor James Ammons told council members the school needs the facilities to keep up with increased enrollment. He expects 1,000 freshmen to start school this fall, compared to 843 last year.
