Cumberland County Jail Employee Suspended After Inmate Mistakenly Released

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An employee of the Cumberland County jail has been suspended with pay as officials investigate the inadvertent release of an inmate over the weekend.

Authorities said Sgt. Scott Burgess mistakenly released Mike Vernon McNeil Friday morning. Jailers confused him with another Michael McNeil, who was supposed to be released Friday.

Mike Vernon McNeil turned himself in to sheriff's deputies Saturday morning after the error was uncovered.

Officials said more charges against Mike Vernon McNeil could follow.
