DURHAM, N.C. — The transformation of the old South Square Mall in Durham has begun.
Construction of a new strip shopping center is underway. The new mall will be anchored by a Super Target -- Durham's first. It is slated to open next year.
Eventually, 14 businesses will sit on the 52-acre shopping center site, including three holdovers from South Square: Chick-fil-A, Firestone and Office Depot.
The old South Square closed last year.
