Accidents Snarl Traffic In Durham Thursday

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Two separate accidents snarled traffic on Guess Road and Interstate 85 in Durham Thursday afternoon.

Authorities said the first accident was reported at 3:48 p.m., when a tractor-trailer struck power lines and pulled them down while leaving a convenience store parking lot on Guess Road near North Pointe Drive. The impact also took down a power pole.

A Durham police officer directing traffic at the accident scene was hospitalized after collapsing from apparent heat exhaustion.

A second accident was reported about an hour later on the Interstate 85 South bridge over Guess Road. Three tractor-trailers and a small-panel truck were involved in the accident, but no one was injured.

The accident occurred when one vehicle slowed down and the others could not slow down in time to avoid a collision.

Authorities have not released the names of the drivers.
