DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham County sheriff's deputy was in good condition at Duke Medical Center on Monday, a day after he was struck by a car.

According to reports, the incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. Deputy Jonathan Helsius, riding a motorcyle, was directing traffic for a funeral escort at Fayetteville Road and Linwood Avenue in Durham.

Helsius initially was knocked unconcious but regained conciousness a few minutes later and was taken to Duke. His X-ray results indicated that he had head and lung injuries, but his injuries were not life threatening.

The motorcycle apparently fell on him after he was hit.

The driver who hit Helsius was charged with a safe movement violation.
