Vance Officials Investigate Shooting Death Of Teen

Posted Updated

VANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A grieving family is speaking out against accusations a deadly shooting was anything but an accident. The Vance County Sheriff's Office is not as convinced.

Detectives said they do not know if anyone is responsible for the death of 18-year-old Jason Wood.

Investigators said Wood was shot in the head in his home Sunday.

Frank Wood said his son bumped into a dresser with a loaded .357 magnum on it. He said the gun fell and discharged, hitting Jason in the head.

"It went off and I came in and Jason looked at me and he just fell. I caught him and that's when I was covered with blood," Frank Wood said.

Frank Wood strongly dismisses reports that he and his son argued before the gun went off.

"It hurts that was the only son I had. I wish it was me that got shot instead of him," Wood said.

Family and friends gathered Monday to comfort each other and to remember the young man they loved.

"Everybody who knew him loved him, his family loved him and he loved his family," Frank Wood said.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been brought in to help with this case. Investigators said they still need to question the family.
