Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Motorists can expect lane closings, various detours and delays as the state Department of Transportation begins work on a stretch of I-85 through Durham County this week.

Crews will be working on a two-mile stretch from east of Cole Mill Road to west of Broad Street. The work will begin Tuesday with the clearing of trees. Roadwork is scheduled to begin by Wednesday.

During construction, two lanes of traffic in each direction will remain open on I-85 during peak travel times (6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday), and during holidays and holiday weekends.

The work includes widening that section to eight lanes, replacing several bridges and improving some area roads.

The $66.6 million project is expected to be complete in early 2007.
