DURHAM, N.C. — A 23-month-old boy was killed Friday afternoon when he was run over by a neighbor's sport utility vehicle, police said.

Maria Teresa Contreras Santos, 32, of 2609½ Holloway St., was backing her 1991 Ford Explorer in a shared driveway at 2609 Holloway St. at about 3 p.m. when Justin Raul Cisneros Saracho, of 2609 Holloway St., ran into the driveway behind the SUV, police said.

The back right tire of the Explorer struck the child, who was two weeks shy of his second birthday, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The child's mother was in the yard with him as he played and witnessed the accident, police said.

Friends and relatives flocked to the family's home to console the grief-stricken parents.

The case remains under investigation, but police said they don't expect any criminal charges will be filed.
