Chapel Hill Police Seek Information About Assaults

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating seven reported assaults during June after making five arrests in three other assault cases.

All 10 cases were reported in the downtown area, though police say there are few similarities among the incidents.

In all the cases, police say, the suspects did not know the victims. Police say all the alleged assaults occurred outside, most occurred between midnight and 3 a.m., and half of them occurred on a Sunday.

Police say some of the incidents arose from verbal altercations, while others were unprovoked.

Police say the reported victims were either punched, hit with an object, kicked or stabbed. Several people suffered serious injuries.

As a result of the incidents, the Chapel Hill Police Department has changed personnel assignments -- affecting officers as well as civilian security monitors -- in the downtown area. Additional officers also will be working in the area.

Anyone with any information about these reported assaults is asked to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at

968-2760

or Crime Stoppers at

226-CRIM(E).

All Crime Stoppers calls are confidential. Reward money is available for information that leads to an arrest.
