Faulty Jail Locks May Have Allowed Durham Inmate To Escape

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Problems with the locks at the Durham County Jail may have helped an inmate escape from his cell.

The Sheriff's Office says it is having mechanical issues with the jail's electronic locks. Guards are running the system manually.

Investigators want to know if the problem helped an inmate get out of his cell June 20.

The former inmate is now back in jail and a guard is on paid leave.
