Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — The parents charged in connection with a Durham fire that seriously hurt their toddler turned themselves in to authorities on Thursday.

Travis Mason and Saretha Singletary are charged with child abuse and neglect. Firefighters pulled their daughter from a burning apartment on Aug. 27. She is now recovering from severe smoke inhalation.

Investigators say the girl and her three siblings were left alone inside their unit at Pinecrest Apartments. The fire was started by a lit candle, said investigators. The fire marshal said the apartment didn't have any electricity at the time of the blaze.

"There are two sides to every story, just remember that," said Mason to reporters during his surrender.

The children are now in the care of social services. The parents are being held under $100,000 bond and are due in court on Friday.
