Kerr Lake Drowning Under Investigation

Posted Updated

WARRENTON, N.C. — Authorities are investigating the apparent drowning of a man in Kerr Lake on Sunday.

The body of Bobby Bassett, 38, of 3178 Buckhorn Lane in Wake Forest, was recovered at about 9 p.m. about 75 feet from Kimble Point, near the Virginia state line, Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams said.

Bassett, who worked for Raleigh's water treatment division, was visiting friends at Kerr Lake for the Labor Day weekend and went swimming at about 7 p.m., but couldn't make it back to shore, Williams said.

The water is about 15 feet deep in the area where his body was found, Williams said.

The Vance County Rescue Squad used a drag net to search the lake and located the body, Williams said. When rescuers found Bassett, they said there was no smell of alcohol on him, so they don't believe alcohol was involved, he said.
