Proposal Would Hike Taxi Rates 42 Percent

RALEIGH, N.C. — Taxi industry officials on Tuesday asked the city of Raleigh for a 42 percent rate increase.
Under the proposed increase, a five-mile cab ride, for example, would cost about $17.
Cab drivers say that despite rising gas costs, they have not seen a hike in years.
If it passes, Raleigh would be the most expensive place to hail a cab in the state.
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker has said that an increase is likely, but probably not the requested 42 percent.
