DURHAM, N.C — A state Highway Patrol trooper was taken to a Durham hospital Monday afternoon after the cruiser he was driving crashed and caught fire.

The accident happened just before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 15-501 and Hillsborough Road in Durham. Both the causes of the crash and the fire were under investigation Monday evening.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the trooper, Bryan T. Kirkpatrick, was taken to Duke Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was to be kept overnight for observation.

No other vehicles were involved, investigators said, and Kirkpatrick was not involved in any enforcement action at the time of the accident.

Kirkpatrick, 32, who is assigned to the Highway Patrol's Durham office, was sworn in as a trooper last September.
